A professional dental check-up and clean is the foundation of good oral health. Regular clinical examinations allow dental professionals to assess the condition of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues, detect concerns at an early stage, and provide preventive care before problems become more complex or costly to treat. At Primary Dental, check-up and clean appointments are tailored to each patient, with a focus on long-term oral health outcomes, clear communication, and personalised guidance to support your at-home hygiene routine.
A dental professional will examine your teeth, gums, soft tissues, and bite. X-rays may be recommended based on your history and clinical findings to identify concerns not visible to the naked eye, such as decay between teeth, bone changes, or early signs of other conditions.
2. Professional scale and clean
Plaque and calculus (tartar) are removed from tooth surfaces and along the gumline using professional instruments. Even with thorough brushing and flossing, tartar accumulates in areas that are difficult to reach and can only be removed with professional cleaning.
3. Gum health assessment
Gum health is assessed as part of every check-up. Early signs of gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, can often be identified and managed before they progress, making regular reviews an important part of protecting your gum and bone health long term.
4. Oral health advice and personalised recommendations
Findings are discussed with you following the examination. Your dental professional will provide personalised advice on home hygiene practices, any treatment that may be recommended, and when your next review is suggested.
Dedicated dental practitioners, focused on your oral health and smile

I’ve been to many dental centres in Sydney and I must say this is one of the best dental service I’ve experienced. The location is so convenient, only 2 min walk from Town Hall. Staffs are supper friendly and gentle. They also offer very affordable price and you can pay with afferpay or zippay, which is amazing! Will definitely be back!

I do enjoy the friendly and helpful staff, it’s makes all the difference. I will be the first to admit the dentist is my least favourite place to go however after my first visit for a general check up, I felt very confident and pleased with my appointment from Dr Brett Moore. He is compassionate and caring :)

For most patients, a professional scale and clean is comfortable. Some sensitivity may be experienced, particularly where there is calculus build-up or gum inflammation. Your dental team will work at a pace that suits you and can discuss options if sensitivity is a concern.
What is calculus and why does it need professional removal?
Calculus, also known as tartar, is hardened plaque that has mineralised on the tooth surface. Once formed, it cannot be removed by brushing or flossing alone and requires professional removal. If left untreated, calculus can contribute to gum inflammation and gum disease. It is usually removed during a routine dental check-up and clean, although a separate appointment may be recommended if there is significant build-up or additional gum care is required.
Are X-rays taken at every appointment?
X-rays are recommended when clinically indicated based on your history, risk profile, and examination findings. Your dental professional will discuss whether X-rays are recommended at a given appointment and explain why, so you can make an informed decision.
I have not been to the dentist in some time. What should I expect?
If you haven't visited the dentist for some time, it's important to arrange a dental check-up to assess your current oral health. The dental team at Primary Dental centres understands that patients may go extended periods without dental care and is focused on supporting their oral health moving forward. A comprehensive dental examination can help identify concerns such as tooth decay or gum disease and establish an appropriate care plan tailored to your needs.
Most dental practitioners recommend a routine check-up and clean every six months, although your dental practitioner may recommend more or less frequent visits based on your oral health, oral hygiene and general health. Booking your next check-up before you leave can help you secure a day and time that suits your schedule.
Is a check-up and clean covered by private health insurance?
Check-up and clean services are generally covered under general dental extras cover. Coverage levels vary between health funds and policies. It is recommended that you check your entitlements with your insurer prior to your appointment.
