Emergency dental care is designed to provide prompt support for urgent dental issues such as toothache, swelling, infection, broken teeth, dental trauma, lost fillings, or denture breakages. Dental pain can be stressful and disruptive. At Primary Dental centres, urgent dental concerns are assessed by dentists as soon as possible for new and existing patients, including same-day appointments where available. Availability varies between centres. Treatment is guided by clinical assessment, triage, and a strong focus on patient comfort, safety, and clear next steps.
When you contact the clinic, the team will ask questions about your symptoms to determine urgency and help guide the safest appointment timeframe.
2. Clinical assessment
A dental professional will assess the problem, including reviewing symptoms and medical history. X-rays may be required to confirm the cause of pain or injury.
3. Immediate treatment or stabilisation
Where possible, the dentist will provide urgent care to relieve pain, manage infection, or stabilise the tooth. In some cases, a staged treatment plan may be recommended.
4. Follow-up and ongoing care
You’ll receive clear aftercare instructions and advice on next steps. Follow-up appointments may be recommended to ensure the issue is fully treated.
Dedicated dental practitioners, focused on your oral health and smile
Dentists at Primary Dental centres assess and manage dental emergencies, including toothache, infection and dental injuries, within their scope of practice. Appointment availability varies between centres, and patients receive clear advice on treatment options and next steps.

I’ve been to many dental centres in Sydney and I must say this is one of the best dental service I’ve experienced. The location is so convenient, only 2 min walk from Town Hall. Staffs are supper friendly and gentle. They also offer very affordable price and you can pay with afferpay or zippay, which is amazing! Will definitely be back!

I do enjoy the friendly and helpful staff, it’s makes all the difference. I will be the first to admit the dentist is my least favourite place to go however after my first visit for a general check up, I felt very confident and pleased with my appointment from Dr Brett Moore. He is compassionate and caring :)

Can I be seen the same day for a dental emergency?
Urgent dental concerns are accommodated as soon as possible, including same-day appointments where available. Appointment availability can vary by centre, so contact your nearest Primary Dental location promptly.
What should I do if I have severe tooth pain?
Tooth pain can have many causes including decay, infection, trauma or gum disease. A clinical assessment is important to identify the cause and provide appropriate treatment. If pain is severe or worsening, contact your dental clinic as soon as possible. If you have facial swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, a high fever, uncontrolled bleeding or a serious facial injury, call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.
Do I need an X-ray for emergency dental treatment?
X-rays are often needed, depending on your symptoms and the dentist’s assessment. X-rays help confirm the cause of pain, infection, or tooth damage and allow the dentist to recommend the safest and most suitable treatment.
What emergency treatments can a dentist provide?
Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Emergency care may include pain relief, infection management, temporary or permanent restorations, drainage where appropriate, stabilising a damaged tooth, or planning follow-up treatment such as a root canal or extraction.
What if my tooth is knocked out?
A knocked-out adult (permanent) tooth requires urgent attention. Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline without scrubbing. If possible, gently place the tooth back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth to hold it in place, or store it in milk or saliva and contact your dental clinic immediately. Do not put a knocked-out baby tooth back in, but have the child seen by a dentist promptly. Prompt treatment improves the chance of saving the tooth.
I’m anxious about dental treatment. Can you help?
Yes. Dental emergencies can feel overwhelming. The team will take a calm, supportive approach, explain each step clearly, and prioritise patient comfort throughout treatment.
