Oral Surgery

Oral surgery may be required to treat a variety of dental and oral conditions, such as severe periodontal disease or the removal of wisdom teeth.

Wisdom tooth removal

Wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) are usually removed in cases where there is not enough room in the back of the mouth for them to come through. Difficulty cleaning the wisdom teeth can lead to oral hygiene issues, as well as aesthetic problems.  Wisdom teeth can become impacted and can cause the other teeth to move or become crooked.

Procedure

Depending on your codition, your dentist may be able to remove your wisdom teeth using an anaesthetic.  In instances where the wisdom teeth are impacted, you may be referred to a specialist for treatment.  Your dentist can advise you on which option is best for you.

To remove the wisdom teeth, the area at the back of the mouth is numbed and the teeth are removed by creating an incision in the gum. Once removed, the gum will be sealed with dissolvable sutures. Pain relief and antibiotics may also be given post operatively to ensure patient comfort and to prevent infection.
